Opportune

Today is a good day. I took Jojo to school and the weather is perfect. Breezy. A little chilly. Excellent. I'm definitely a weather-driven person. I won't go outside if it's too hot. Cold I can deal with. I picked up this stupid thing called Cold Uticaria(?) which makes me break out in hives if cold hits my skin. It's not always so severe but I have to take Benedryl to make the hives stop and then I have to have a nap...which is always encouraged! Kris asked me to make an REM cd for her so i've been listening to them. They ruled my world for a lot of years and i've stolen some of their approach now and again. Who doesn't like jangly guitars? I'm sure (next to John Lennon, Roger McGuinn and Tom Pettty) Peter Buck has helped sell quite a few Rickenbackers. When i'm on a session and I run out of ideas, I always revert back to the Peter Buck picking method. Works every time.

I think it's obvious that there is some unwritten marital law that in order for one partner to have a good day, it is imperative the other have a bad one.

Gah. Ack. Feh. Moo. And a whole slew of other cyberOnomatopoeia.

And I made that comment BEFORE the call from ER!! WTF?!? Curve balls from the universe day!

Thank you for your help this afternoon with keeping Jojo entertained while I work. I love you.

i recently had an uncontrollable jones to hear a few early REM tracks: good advices from fables (maybe my favorite of their albums), and south central rain from reckoning (probably my second favorite). such incredibly satisfying music. good advices is still a favorite, love those melodic mike mills bass lines and peter buck's jangle with stipe's droning voice. i tell you, i'd make a pretty mean REM mix disc myself...

I, too, dig on So. Central Rain and have a soft spot for Fall on Me.

Just reading about Cold Urticaria ("Google--reducing people's need to think or remember anything since 1998"...according to Google). One site says it's "common... and usually lasts 5-6 years". Another says it's on somebody's list of the "185 most rare conditions", next to rabies and syphillis. Of course, this completely negates the large population of those who've been post-coitally bitten by rabid hookers.

Also, one treatment method is with the antidepressant doxepin, which mean that, potentially, you can feel better and feel better all at the same time!

fall on me is another top five REM favorite for me. maybe even top three. i'm with you there, but you lost me with the syphillis and doxepin.

Pete actually got me into REM heavily. I liked them but he really sold me on them many moons ago. I play with a guy called Charlie Pickett who played with them a lot and Peter Buck produced an album of his on TwinTone. I would pick Kohoutek, Rockville, Burning Down, Gardening At Night, Shaking Through....ah hell, it's hard to narrow it down. I'm thinking Untitled from Green with Peter on drums. Thanks, Pete!

yeah you must be thanking me for those first four albums on vinyl (murmur, reckoning, fables, pagaent) that i'm still waiting to get back...

did buck play drums on untitled? where did you see that?

Thanks for the cd, but Waldo took it home by accident. And get this--I've heard "Can't Get There From Here," "Driver 8," and "South Central Rain" today on various Sirius channels.

For some reason, something is trying to remind me that they were once my salvation.

Has it really been 21 years since I saw them at Sunrise?!?

Hey Mikey!

Sorry it took so long to get around to checking your blog out...this is AWESOME!!!

My fave REM of course is the AFTP disc, (Nightswimming is an amazing tune) but I do like eponymous as well...sorry to hear about your recent maladies; hope you're feeling better soon!

Uhhh...remember when you said that if I had any guitar questions, just ask? Well...I "acquired" this really inexpensive (translation: Music123 sent me email whose subject line was "We're Crazy! $100 Guitar Sale") guitar that's cool and all, but the frets seem...hmmm...howdoUsayit..."unfinished.
they don't feel tapered when I slide up the neck, creating a potential "Look at me - I'm a guitar hero cuz I played 'till my fingers bled" scenario...
Do ya have any ideas on how I can get 'em filed down (preferably, for less than I paid for the darn thing) or maybe if I should try to do so myself? In the meantime, I am gonna check it out on Google to see if there's a how-to...probably on the same web site that sells DIY dentistry and gall bladder removal kits and such...

Let me know...

Rock ON!

Lemme answer Pete first. I think it was in Spin. You can tell it's not Bill Berry 'cause the drumming is so crummy. Terence, i'll answer you later..gotta run to rehearsal.

Terrence,
There is something you can try to do yourself. I'll have to describe it to you next time i see you.

Hey, Mike!

Mr. Impatient here...

Recap/update:

The new guitar, a Fullerton SS3, was intended to be my Blues machine; it’s a really inexpensive Strat copy. All I can say is, wow. Initially, I noticed that the guitar’s neck was unfinished, to the point that I actually cut my hand doing one of those fast-picking-runs-down-the-neck thingys(dang those Ventures and their fast-picking-runs-down-the-neck thingys!!!!).

I immediately summoned up all my Google super powers to find a users group that had similar issues by googling FILING DOWN FRETS ON GUITAR. It’s amazing how many other folks had this same issue. Found me a little how-to, went to Home Depot and got me a three-sided file, sound diamond-grade fine sandpaper and went to work.

Well, two adult beverages and a Utah Jazz OT victory later, and we now have an AMAZING piece of American Axology. This baby does it all; once I threw those GHS Boomers Low strings on it (11's; trying to get a deeper sound out of it). I am now ready to begin the quest to create me some of my own Rock-N-Roll history!!!

(I really should start a blog)

LOL

(P.S. At least I was astute enough to know not to annoy you guys further with pics of the new baby, like most other people do when they get a new child…)

:-)

Terrence,
Pix would be fine and congrats on the handiwork. I was going o suggest something I learned in my two years as a failed guitarrepairperson. Remind me and i'll tell you about it sometime.
